Pune: Landslide Blocks Bhimashankar Road Amid Heavy Rains, Alternative Routes Arranged for Tourists
Pune, 1st August 2023: In a picturesque region of Sahyadri, heavy rains have been drawing numerous tourists, with Bhimashankar, one of India’s twelve Jyotirlingas, being a popular destination. However, the road leading to Bhimashankar faced a significant obstacle when a massive landslide struck Newalwadi, Shinoli village, resulting in one-way traffic on July 31. To ensure travelers’ safety and convenience, authorities have set up alternative routes through Wada village, Khed police station limits.
Torrential rains have heavily impacted the tribal areas of Ambegaon taluka, causing water to flood roads and small bridges. Motorists are urged to avoid driving through flooded areas, and safety measures are being emphasized by authorities.
Currently, traffic to Bhimashankar is operating as one-way due to the road blockage at Shinoli-Newalwadi. In case of increased traffic, diversion will be implemented via Koldara-Amondi. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and exploring transportation options to facilitate smooth traffic flow promptly.
Bhimashankar, nestled in Pune district’s Khed taluka, not only captivates with its scenic beauty but also holds religious significance as one of Lord Shankar’s twelve Jyotirlingas. The revered Bhima River, a vital waterway in Western Maharashtra, originates from this sacred site.
Located amidst the lush forests of Sahyadri mountains, Bhimashankar is a habitat to diverse wildlife, including wild boars, sambar, sheep, wild cats, leopards, and various bird species. Notably, the rare reddish fox, locally known as “shekaru,” is found exclusively in this forest. The forest department has taken initiatives to conserve wildlife, particularly leopards.
Perched atop a high mountain in the western Sahyadri range, the spiritual haven of Bhimashankar temple attracts devotees and nature enthusiasts alike. As the sixth Jyotirlinga, this religious site dedicated to Lord Shankar offers a serene and spiritual experience amidst nature’s splendor.
