Pune, 31st July 2023: As the administrative arrangements for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Pune on August 1 are underway, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken an enthusiastic step by conducting RT-PCR tests for more than two hundred and fifty individuals involved in the program, even though they were not COVID-19 positive.

This decision was made in a recent municipal meeting to ensure the safety of leaders, officials, and employees who will be present on the stage during the Prime Minister’s visit.

Despite no official notification from the Prime Minister’s Office, PMC swiftly moved forward with the decision, organizing tests for MLAs, politicians, social workers, municipal officials, and other participants. The health department officials and employees worked on a Sunday, collecting samples from the identified individuals to carry out RTPCR testing at Sassoon hospital.

However, this move by the municipal corporation has raised concerns and questions, especially considering the decline in the number of COVID-19 cases in the country and the lifting of most restrictions. Health experts are seeking clarification on the basis for PMC’s decision in the absence of instructions from the Prime Minister’s Office.

When asked about the testing initiative, Dr. Bhagwan Pawar, Head of Health at the Municipal Corporation, stated that the tests were conducted as part of the preparations for PM Modi’s visit.

While the city gears up to welcome the Prime Minister, the testing episode has sparked debates about the necessity of such measures during the current phase of the pandemic.
