Camp, 21st July 2023: The Kondhwa slaughterhouse managed by the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) has been yielding meager revenue while incurring maintenance costs amounting to crores of rupees. As a result, the board has reached the decision to close down the facility in the near future, according to Subrata Pal, CEO of Pune Cantonment Board. The impending closure of the slaughterhouse was met with protests by businessmen who held a dharna on July 10.

Following the demonstrations, MLA Sunil Kamble met with the President and CEO of the board to request a ten-day concession for the affected businessmen. As a result, the board administration has granted temporary relief to professionals operating at the Kondhwa Slaughter House.

The Kondhwa slaughterhouse dates back to the British era and its closure has been prompted by financial constraints faced by the board. The annual maintenance cost of the slaughterhouse amounts to Rs 1 crore 25 lakh, which the board has been solely responsible for covering. However, the revenue generated from the slaughterhouse, in the form of rent from businessmen, only amounts to a meager five lakh rupees per year.

Traders at the facility charge a mere Rs 16 for slaughtering a goat, in stark contrast to the Municipal Slaughter House, which charges Rs 250.
Given the significant financial loss incurred by the board due to the Kondhwa slaughterhouse’s operations, the decision to shut it down has become inevitable, as stated by the board administration. This move has also been met with protests from members of the All India Jamaitul Quresh Action Committee.
