Pune, 15th July 2023: The city has witnessed a surge in the number of dengue patients, with 92 suspected cases reported in July alone. Out of these, 12 have been confirmed as dengue-positive. This concerning rise in cases has prompted health experts to urge citizens to take preventive measures and be aware of the necessary precautions in the event of dengue infection.

In the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) area, the number of patients has been steadily rising since the start of this month. Health experts emphasize the importance of caution and vigilance. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 10 to 40 million people worldwide are infected with dengue each year, primarily in warm and temperate regions.

Recognizing the Symptoms: Most dengue infections present mild symptoms or may even be asymptomatic. Symptoms typically appear between 4 to 10 days after infection and last for about 2 to 7 days. Key symptoms include high fever (104°F), severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, dizziness, nausea, swollen glands, and skin rashes.

Preventive Measures: Given that the dengue mosquito is active during the day, precautionary measures must be taken throughout the day. It is advised to wear clothing that covers the body completely and use mosquito repellents in the surroundings. Installing nets on windows can also prevent mosquitoes from entering homes.

Actions to Take in Case of Dengue: It is essential to prioritize rest and stay well-hydrated. Consuming plenty of fluids is crucial. Paracetamol tablets can be taken to alleviate body pain, while avoiding the use of painkillers. Severe symptoms should be promptly addressed by seeking medical attention.

Dr Bhagwan Pawar, PMC’s Health Officer, assured the public that dengue prevention measures are being implemented in Pune city. Spraying efforts are underway, targeting areas prone to dengue infestation. The ward offices are actively identifying and eliminating potential breeding sites. Naidu Hospital and Kamala Nehru Hospital have made necessary preparations to provide treatment for dengue patients.
