Pune, 13th July 2023: The long-awaited inauguration of the new cargo terminal at Pune airport has been stalled by bureaucratic hurdles, despite the completion of construction work. The terminal remains non-operational as it awaits clearance from the Civil Aviation Security Department.

The suspension of international cargo operations at Pune airport over the past seven months has taken a toll on businesses, leading to a growing demand for the terminal to commence operations promptly.

With the absence of a functioning cargo terminal, businesses have been compelled to dispatch their goods from Mumbai if they intend to send them abroad. In January, the Civil Aviation Security Department ordered the closure of the cargo facilities at Pune airport due to infrastructure defects and non-compliance with several conditions. Although SpiceJet and IndiGo were later permitted to handle domestic cargo, international cargo operations have yet to be authorized.

According to sources, officials from the Civil Aviation Security Department conducted an inspection of the new cargo terminal. However, approval for the terminal’s operation is still pending. Once the necessary clearance is obtained, the terminal will be commissioned to facilitate the much-needed resumption of cargo operations at Pune airport.
