Pune Municipal Corporation Launches WhatsApp Number To Report Unlawful Businesses In Residential Areas Like Rooftop Restaurants, Pubs
Pune, 5th July 2023: Pune Municipal Corporation’s property tax department took a significant step on Tuesday by introducing a dedicated WhatsApp number (8308059999) for citizens to report unlawful businesses operating in residential areas.
These businesses have been functioning without the necessary permissions from the construction department, and some owners operate them until late at night. This leads to parking and traffic issues, as customers often park their vehicles on the roads. Numerous complaints have been filed against these establishments by public representatives and social organizations. The introduction of this initiative will aid authorities in cracking down on these illegal activities.
In recent months, strict actions have been taken against rooftop bars in various areas, including Mohammadwadi, Kalyani Nagar, Yerawada, Koregaon Park, Baner, Pashan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and the Old Mumbai-Pune highway. These rooftop establishments have been a source of significant disturbance for residents, with complaints about late-night operations and noise pollution becoming increasingly prevalent. The launch of the war room and the WhatsApp number aims to address these concerns, as stated by a civic official.
The property tax department, responsible for determining the annual taxable amount for different property types (residential, non-residential, and vacant land) within the PMC jurisdiction, assesses properties based on the provisions of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act and the applicable tariff for the fiscal year.
Citizens are encouraged to anonymously report any illegal activities taking place in hotels, pubs, or restaurants to the war room using the provided WhatsApp number. This initiative aims to prevent financial losses to the civic body caused by unauthorized businesses operating in residential properties.
Ajit Deshmukh, the head of the PMC property tax department, expressed that the initiative’s primary objective is to effectively address the problem of unauthorized businesses, including rooftop hotels, pubs, and restaurants, within the city. Citizens are advised to utilize the newly-launched WhatsApp number to report such activities while maintaining their anonymity. The department anticipates a significant increase in public engagement and a surge in complaints if citizens actively participate in reporting these issues.
