Pune, 4th July 2023: A case of fraud has come to light where a young woman was cheated out of Rs 6.5 lakhs through a false identity on a matrimony website. The Faraskhana police have taken cognizance of the matter and registered a case against a Nashik resident named Abhijit Prakash Bhalerao (28) in connection with the incident.

The victim, who has chosen to remain anonymous, lodged a complaint at the Faraskhana police station detailing her ordeal. According to her, she and the accused, Bhalerao, connected on a matrimony website. Bhalerao deceitfully manipulated the young woman by promising marriage and subsequently extorted money from her and her mother on various pretexts.

Under false pretences, Bhalerao convinced the young woman that her cousin had met with an accident, thereby coercing her to provide financial assistance. Over time, he managed to extract a total of six lakhs and sixty-six thousand rupees from the victim and her mother, claiming it was needed for her sister’s hospitalization expenses. Bhalerao directed the funds to the bank accounts of his father and sister through online transfers.

Suspicions arose in the young woman’s mind, leading her to demand the return of the money. Bhalerao reluctantly returned a portion of the amount, but refused to repay the remaining sum. Realizing she had fallen victim to a fraud, the young woman promptly filed a complaint with the police.

Assistant Police Inspector Shete is investigating the case.
