Pune, 20th June 2023: A young IT professional fell victim to a sextortion attempt, resulting in an extortion of 1,042,000 rupees. The complaint reveals that this sum was deceitfully acquired under the pretence of being demanded by the Cyber Police Commissioner.

A case has been registered against an unidentified woman who possessed the mobile phone used in the case and the fraudulent individual impersonating the officer.

According to the police, the 33-years-old complainant, works as an IT officer with a jeweler. In February 2022, he received a video call from an unidentified woman who appeared naked. During the call, the woman took a screenshot of the video.

Subsequently, she sent these screenshots to him and threatened to distribute them widely among his relatives and friends. To prevent the dissemination, she demanded a total of Rs 39 lakh via online transactions. Following this, he received a call from an individual claiming to be Cyber Police Commissioner Srivastava. The imposter informed the complainant that he had apprehended the woman involved and had uploaded the relevant screenshot and video on YouTube. However, he demanded a fine from him for the video’s upload, ultimately extorting an additional Rs 3.28 lakh from him.

The fraudulent activities persisted as the imposter asserted that the police required funds for their investigation. So he sent an additional sum of Rs 2.6 lakh.

In May 2022, the complainant was contacted by someone claiming to be Rahul Sharma, who stated that an excessive amount of 173,180 rupees had been sent and that he’ll refund it to him. But, the individual urged him to send the funds back, resulting in him sending an additional 427,000 rupees to Rahul.

The situation took a turn on the evening of 14th May 2023, when the complainant received another call, informing him that the woman had committed suicide and he will have to pay the deceased woman’s relatives. At this point, the youth realized he was being deceived and promptly approached the police to lodge a formal complaint.
