Pune: Senior Citizen Takes Tragic Step After Loudspeaker Dispute at Haldi Ceremony; Five Arrested in Connection with Suicide
Yerwada, 30th May 2023: A 70-year-old citizen, identified as Dnyaneshwar Salunkhe, ended his life by jumping from the Bundgarden bridge after facing humiliation during a dispute over a speaker. Five people have been arrested in connection with the suicide till now.
Pandurang Dnyaneshwar Salunkhe, the son of the deceased, filed a complaint at Yerwada police station, which subsequently led to the arrest of Chetan Belle (26), Devesh alias Nanya Pawar (18), Yash Mohite (19), Shahrukh Khan (26), and Jai Tanaji Bhadkumbhe (22). The distressing incident occurred in the Navi Khadki area of Yerwada, Pune on the night of May 28.
The altercation began when Chetan Belle, who resides next to the complainant’s residence, was hosting a Haldi ceremony accompanied by loud music from the speakers. Dnyaneshwar Salunkhe politely requested the individuals to lower the volume as it was causing a disturbance in their vicinity. Instead of understanding the concern, the accused insulted and chased him away.
Despite the initial confrontation, the commotion continued unabated, prompting Salunkhe to approach the accused once again, urging them to reduce the noise. It was at this moment that the accused resorted to physical violence, mercilessly kicking the senior citizen. When Salunkhe’s family members intervened to rescue him, they too became victims of the assault. Chetan Belle, in a brutal act, struck the complainant on the head, causing severe injury.
Following the distressing incident, Dnyaneshwar Salunkhe mustered the courage to approach the Yerwada police station to lodge a complaint. However, this act of seeking justice only further enraged the accused, leading to another violent attack on the senior citizen by Chetan Belle. Due to the humiliation and the relentless beatings, Dnyaneshwar Salunkhe felt driven to the brink, ultimately taking his own life by jumping into the river from the Bundgarden Bridge.
