Pune, 30th May 2023: A young man who risked his life by climbing on the flyover pillar at Sancheti Hospital Chowk in Pune has finally ended his protest. After being rescued by firefighters, the protester, Mahendra Davkhar, spoke to the media to explain the reasons behind his actions.

Davkhar, a resident of Junnar and the son of a farmer, expressed his frustration with the delayed work of Tehsildar Junnar and other government officials. He believed that their inefficiency and injustice forced him to take extreme measures. He acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the traffic jam and apologized to the public, but also emphasized that these questions were relevant to everyone. He questioned the government’s responsiveness and the accountability of officials when they make mistakes.

According to Davkhar, he resorted to this protest because the Tehsildar had hired him for work but repeatedly cheated him. The Tehsildar allegedly promised to submit his report to the higher authorities, but failed to do so. Frustrated with the lack of progress, Davkhar took this drastic step to bring attention to his plight.

In response, the Tehsildar of Junnar presented his side of the story. He clarified that Mahendra’s father, Sampat Davkhar, is from Sultanpur village and has some properties in the village. There have been some errors in the updation of 7/12 land extract. Although previous Tehsildars completed the work within their jurisdiction, their appeals for further action were rejected by superiors.

The Tehsildar advised them to file an appeal, but Mahendra insisted that they should do it on his behalf. However, this particular matter did not fall under the Tehsildar’s jurisdiction, and he informed them accordingly. On the 23rd May, Mahendra began a fast, which he ended after his report was forwarded. However, without any prior notice, he resumed the fast in Pune. After speaking to Mahendra’s father, the Tehsildar was able to convince him to call off the fast, but Mahendra remained adamant.

The incident highlights the frustrations of individuals dealing with bureaucratic delays and alleged injustice. It also sheds light on the need for better communication and resolution mechanisms between citizens and government officials.
