Pune, 30th May 2023: In a significant development, Mukund Abhyankar (86), the former chairman and current director of the Cosmos Co-operative Bank Limited, has been convicted and sentenced to six months of simple imprisonment by a magisterial court. The court found him guilty of a hit-and-run accident that occurred in 2016, resulting in the tragic death of a female scooterist on Bhandarkar Road. Abhyankar has also been ordered to pay a fine of Rs 1,200.

The incident took place on July 17, 2016, when Abhyankar collided with a scooter, leading to the fatal injury of the rider, Arundhati Hasabnis (28), an employee of a public-sector bank. The magistrate read out the relevant portions of the judgment, which resulted in the conviction and the subsequent sentencing of Abhyankar.
