Pune, 22nd May 2023: Looking at the geographical situation of the state, many experts estimate that there will be at least 2.5 lakh bee colonies in the state, and lakhs of tons of honey can be produced from this. Currently, 1.5 lakh kg of honey is produced every year.

The state has a large area of the Sahyadri Mountains in the Western Ghats. It includes about 12 districts and 63 talukas. Eco-forests and bee-friendly flora are abundant in the Western Ghats.

In the areas of Patgaon Ajra in Kolhapur, Bhudargarh, Mahabaleshwar, Patan, Jawli, and Wai in Satara district, many people are still dependent on the beekeeping business. Dairy production, beekeeping, poultry farming, cattle breeding, silk industry, etc are many industries that are complementary to agriculture. Among all these, beekeeping can be a profitable industry in the future.

Bees not only produce honey and wax but also increase the yield of crops by 35 to 40 per cent. Since there is a huge demand for honey in the world, there is also a greater scope for its export. Bees maintain the balance of nature. The state government is providing a 50 per cent subsidy for beekeeping, free training, and a guarantee of honey purchase.

Beekeeping has given employment to self-help groups. Bee tourism also increased. Agriculture in the village has become organic. With the increase in income, many people have gained permanent employment.

Beekeeping is an important industry for farmers. Given the increasing demand for honey and the increase in agricultural crop production in the future, this industry has the potential to generate huge economic returns and create many employment opportunities.
