Pune, 20th May 2023: The quest to conserve water has led the Pune municipal corporation (PMC) to implement a one-day water supply halt, but to the dismay of residents, this interruption has extended for three consecutive days.

The inadequacy of water supply has been particularly felt in Prabhat Road and surrounding suburbs, including the central areas (Peths), on Saturday (20th). Adding to the frustration, the information regarding the number of tankers arranged by the Municipal Corporation remains elusive.

With the looming threat of diminished rainfall due to the El Nino effect, the possibility of a severe water shortage looms over the city if dam water storage is not adequately replenished. In response to this precarious situation, the PMC took the decision to conserve water by halting the supply every Thursday, a measure that came into effect on May 18. However, following the water cutoff on Friday, citizens were confronted with low-pressure water supply on Saturday as well.

Taking lessons from past experiences, the Municipal Corporation took steps to install air valves at 20 key locations and ensured that water center tanks were filled two hours ahead of schedule. Additionally, a system of tankers was put in place, but its effectiveness within the city remains questionable.

On Saturday, many areas within Pune continued to suffer from insufficient water supply. Peth areas experienced water flowing at low pressure, while other regions, including Shivajinagar Gaothan, Ganeshkhind Road, Prabhat Road, Keshavnagar, Mundhwa, Katraj-Kondhwa Road, and certain parts of Hadapsar, faced water scarcity.
