Pune, 16th May 2023: In the face of numerous incidents where tourists risk their lives by entering the catchment area of the dam, the Water Resources Department is considering imposing restrictions on tourist access within a 20 km radius behind the Khadakwasla Dam. Officials from the Water Resources Department have announced that the order will be issued shortly.

On Monday, two girls tragically drowned in the Khadakwasla Dam, while the vigilance of locals managed to save the lives of five other girls. These tourists from another district entered the water from the backside of the dam. Officials have revealed that the incident occurred because the girls were unaware of the dam’s depth and the dangers involved, despite warning signs prohibiting swimming in the area.

The catchment area of the Khadakwasla Dam is located in close proximity to the city, spanning approximately 20 to 22 km on both sides of the dam. Consequently, this area is frequented by a large number of tourists, particularly during the summer vacation season.

Since the dam supplies water to the city, the Water Resources Department has prohibited entry into the reservoir. Prohibition signs have been prominently displayed in the dam area, and ten security guards have been deployed in the vicinity. The department has also sought assistance from the Police Department to ensure security. A fine of Rs 500 is imposed on individuals found entering the water, yet tourists continue to disregard the restrictions.

Vijay Patil, Executive Engineer of the Khadakwasla Irrigation Department, informed that nets have recently been installed in the quadrangle area near the dam in collaboration with the Public Works Department and Forest Department. Additionally, warning signs have been erected to alert visitors to the dangers. Ten security guards are stationed on a daily basis to monitor the area.

“Due to the large catchment area of this dam, tourists often enter the water from the backside, leading to unfortunate incidents. Plans are underway to prevent tourists from entering the water through this route,” added Patil.

The Water Resources Department aims to ensure the safety of both tourists and locals by implementing measures to restrict access to the catchment area. By raising awareness about the dangers and strictly enforcing the ban, they hope to prevent future incidents and protect the lives of visitors.
