Mumbai, 15th May 2023: Maharashtra Women’s Commission President Rupali Chakankar revealed in a press conference that a significant number of women from Pune, Maharashtra, are being trafficked to Dubai and Oman. Out of the victims, 82 women alone are from Pune, highlighting the alarming extent of the issue.

The press conference was attended by Rupali Chakankar and Special Inspector General of Police, Deepak Pandey, from the Women and Child Crime Prevention Department. A case has been registered against two traffickers in Sakinaka. Chakankar emphasized that human trafficking is being carried out under the guise of offering job opportunities or other enticements.

Chakankar further expressed concerns about the rising incidents of women disappearing in Maharashtra in recent days. The Women’s Commission has been actively addressing this issue since January 5, 2022. However, there seems to be a lack of concrete actions taken by the police. The Missing Cell and Bharosa Cell, which are meant to address such cases, exist only on paper.

Despite reaching out to the government, there has been no response to address the issue adequately. In light of this, the Women’s Commission plans to send a letter to the state government, urging the formation of a dedicated committee to tackle the problem. The commission also recommended that the government provide regular reports on missing girls to the Women’s Commission every 15 days, ensuring transparency and accountability in dealing with these cases.
