Mumbai, 15th May 2023: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde chaired a review meeting today to discuss the implementation of non-bailable cases against drivers of public transport services who engage in reckless driving without a license or under the influence of alcohol. Taking inspiration from Himachal Pradesh, Chief Minister Shinde emphasized the need for strict legal measures to prevent the loss of lives due to the negligence of drivers.

The meeting, held at Sahyadri Guest House, was attended by Director General of Police Rajnish Seth, Principal Secretary of the Home Department, Additional Director General of Police Ravindra Singhal, Commissioner of Transport Vivek Bhimanwar, and other officials.

Reckless and drunk driving has resulted in a surge in accidents, leading to the tragic loss of innocent lives. In 2021 alone, there were 20,860 accidents caused by speeding, claiming the lives of 9,829 individuals.

The meeting deliberated on the proposal by the Home Department to classify reckless driving on public roads as a non-bailable offence. This move aims to ensure effective action against drivers involved in accidents and the subsequent deaths of passengers due to driver negligence in public transport vehicles. To achieve this, amendments to existing laws are necessary, including bringing drivers operating without a license and those driving under the influence of alcohol within the purview of the proposed legislation.

During the meeting, Chief Minister Shinde also sought updates on ongoing measures to prevent accidents on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and Samriddhi Highway, demonstrating his commitment to road safety.
