Pune, 11th May 2023: While implementing the river bank development project, it is being demanded that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) should first purify the city’s wastewater and release it into the river and then develop the river bank. However, along with the riverside development project, 11 new Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) will be set up in the city by the Municipal Corporation, of which the work of eight centers is going on.

The municipal administration has claimed that after the completion of 11 centers, 100 per cent of the wastewater generated in the city will be collected and released into the river. City Engineer Prashant Waghmare has disclosed that the administration is also implementing a JICA scheme with an expenditure of around Rs 1275 crores.

The river bank development project will be implemented by the municipal corporation which will develop the river bank of around 44 km. In this project, the administration has put a proposal before the tree authority committee to remove about 4,500 trees. Environmentalists of the city have strongly objected to this proposal, and it is being demanded that the municipal corporation should first stop the sewage coming into the river and then trees should be developed on the banks.

Speaking about this, Waghmare said that 11 new STP plants are being set up to process the sewage collected in the city and release it into the river. After the construction of these plants, the quality of water in the river will surely improve.

“Even after the construction of these plants, even today, sewage from the Kothrud, Ambilodha, Nagzari, and Bhairoba drains directly enters the river bed. Mainly, the sewage from the slums located along these drains enters the drains and streams. Drainage lines have been developed along these drains and streams. But in many places, due to the destruction of drainage and pipelines, it is seen that sewage is flowing through drains and streams,” he added further.

In this background, in the river improvement scheme, 1,600 mm from both sides of the river to Mundhwa to carry the sewage coming from these drains and streams. The purpose of laying diameter pipelines has been made in the River Bank Improvement Plan. These pipelines will be connected by tapping where the drains and streams meet the river. Therefore, Waghmare has also claimed that sewage will not enter the river and that only clean water will enter the river in the drains and streams during monsoons.
