Chandannagar, May 2, 2023: The Pune police have arrested Sheikh Khalil Sheikh Jaleem from Buldhana district, Maharashtra, for forging a Nikahnama (marriage certificate) and using it to defame a woman. The accused had been on the run for the past nine months before the Chandannagar police apprehended him.

Last July, the police received a complaint from a 24-year-old woman regarding the forged Nikahnama, which led to an investigation into the matter. The accused claimed that the fake document was genuine and used it to spread negative propaganda against her in the Muslim community.

After nine months of searching, the police received a tip-off that the accused was hiding in Chikhali, Buldhana district. They laid a trap and successfully apprehended the accused.

The police revealed that the main accused, Imran Shaikh (38) of Ghorpadi, had earlier been arrested. He runs a marriage bureau, and the woman’s family had shared her biodata in hopes of finding a prospective groom. Imran started stalking the woman and proposed marriage, but she refused due to the age gap. Imran got the fake Nikahnama made from Khalil and circulated it among friends and relatives. When the girl’s family found out, they filed a complaint.

The investigation team included Senior Police Inspector Rajendra Landge, Police Inspector (Crime) Jaganath Jankar, PSI Goraksh Ghodke, and policemen Namdev Gaddare, Sachin Randive and Santosh Lavte.

Pune Police Crime Branch has also arretsed Imran for trying to implicate the girl in extortion cases. He used to call politicians and businessmen using her details.
