Pune, 27th April 2023: About 3.5 lakh trees have grown in the city in the last four years. Pune is coming forward as a green city in the country. It has been reported that the Dhankawadi-Sahakar Nagar ward office in the city has the most greenery.

The city has made continuous efforts over the past few years to increase the greenery. This seems to be the visible result of NGOs, social organizations, the participation of local citizens, and the positive response of the municipal administration to their every initiative.

In summer, there is a water shortage on Taljai Hill. Each nature lover who came to the hill took care of the plants like their own child. The plants were watered regularly. In Bhamburda too, some locals water the trees in summer in the same way. Citizens also said that due to their activism, this area is seen blooming with trees in eight to ten years.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has consistently undertaken the initiative of planting trees in large areas such as various parks, and open spaces near lakes, and hills in the city for the past few years. At the same time, tree planting activities were carried out at road dividers and wherever there was free space, resulting in an increase in the number of trees in the city.

Ashok Ghorpade, Chief Superintendent, Parks Department, Pune Municipal Corporation informed that a campaign was carried out to increase the number of trees in the city. Local citizens were involved in planting trees in open spaces.

Since 2007, the Municipal Corporation has given priority to planting local trees. PMC encouraged NGOs and social organizations to plant trees. PMC made water and pits available for planted trees. Activities like Forest Festival were also arranged to promote tree plantation.

If one tree was cut, it is preferred to plant three new trees and nurture them. Reportedly, 26,000 trees were planted at Uruli Garbage Depot. The plantation drive was organized on the banks of lakes like Katraj and Pashan. The city has 210 parks spread over 600 acres. In each of these parks, emphasis is placed on planting native trees.

-41,94,623 2018-19
-47,13,791: 2020-21
