Pimpri, 25th April 2023: Pimpri-Chinchwad city is supplied with water from Pavana dam in Maval taluka. The Water Resources Department has increased the rates for water quotas sanctioned to the municipality. Doubling these rates will put a financial burden on the municipal administration.

Therefore, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has to pay an additional amount of Rs 26 crores to the government. So after starting to lift water from all three dams, about Rs 100 crore will have to be paid to the government for water.

The city is supplied with 510 MLD from Pavana Dam and 540 MLD from MIDC. As the population of the city reaches 30 lakh houses, the said water supply is not enough. Therefore, for the past 3.3 years, water supply has been going on in the city for alternative days.

Due to this, there are a lot of complaints from citizens in summer. Municipal Corporation has to spend a lot of money for a smooth water supply. In addition, the increase in water rates by the Water Resources Department has increased the pressure on the municipality’s budget.

The Water Resources Department was charging 55 paise for 1,000 liters from the Municipal Corporation. The annual bill for 510 MLD of water per day is Rs 26 crores. However, the Water Resources Department has doubled these rates. A new rate of Rs 1.10 has been implemented for 1,000 liters. Therefore, the municipality will have to pay a bill of Rs 52 crores for the year. Due to this, the financial burden on the municipality has doubled.

Also, about 100 MLD more water than the sanctioned quota is being withdrawn from the municipality. It has been increased to Rs 2.20 per 1,000 liters. The municipality will have to pay a bill of Rs 74 crores to the Water Resources Department for the years after keeping the penalty amount.

100 MLD from Andhra Dam and 267 MLD from Bhama Askhed Dam in Khed Taluka have been reserved. For this, the municipality will pay Rs 279 crores to the municipal Water Resources Department as rehabilitation costs in five years.

After starting to lift the water, the municipality will have to pay the bill at the rate of Rs 1.10 for 1,000 liters. The municipality has to spend about Rs 100 crore every year for the water in the three dams namely Pavana, Andra, and Bhama Askhed.

There is a lot of strain on the budget of the municipal corporation to buy and supply water. However, the authorities have claimed that in comparison to that, the water bill is taken less by the citizens. Therefore, there is a possibility that the municipality will increase the water bill to cover this cost in the future.
