Pune, 21st April 2023: Pune city is facing an inevitable water shortage due to the increasing summer heat and dwindling water storage in the Khadakwasla chain project that supplies water to the city.

As a result, the water supply department of the Municipal Corporation is considering shutting off water supply once a week. The decision is expected to be sealed in the canal committee meeting chaired by Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil.

Currently, the Khadakwasla dam chain has a water storage of about 12.30 billion cubic feet (TMC). The demand for water has increased due to the increasing heat and El Nino, which is predicted to cause less rainfall this year. Against this backdrop, a meeting was held between the officials of the Municipal Corporation and the Water Resources Department. While reviewing the water in Khadakwasla Dam, the Water Resources Department had advised the Municipal Corporation to use water sparingly.

Many parts of the city are currently suffering from inadequate water supply. If water is supplied during the day, its effect remains for the next two days. After the water cut, there is insufficient water supply for the next few days. Therefore, the water supply department of the Municipal Corporation believes it will be useful to keep the water off once a week.

The Municipal Corporation has also started using the modern technology of ‘Acoustic Sensor’ on an experimental basis to detect water leakage. Leakage has been observed at 13 places on the main channel from Vadgaon water center to Kedareshwar water tank at Katraj. Accordingly, work has been undertaken to close the leak. In the same way, the leakage of water from the main water channels will be detected and closed.

Additionally, action has been ordered against washing centers that use drinking water to wash cars to avoid wastage of drinking water, and instructions have been given to builders and other departments of the Municipal Corporation to use treated water for construction.

The final decision regarding the weekly water supply cut will be taken in the canal committee meeting to be held in the next few days under the chairmanship of Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil.
