Pune, 18th April 2023: In the meeting held on Tuesday (18th April) between officials from the Water Resources Department of Maharashtra state government and the Water Supply Department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), no decision was made regarding any kind of water reduction.

As a result, while a water cut for Pune residents has been avoided for the time being, there is a possibility that a decision regarding the water cut will be made in the meeting of the canal committee to be held in the presence of Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil.

The Khadakwasla dam chain currently has 12 TMC of water storage. Approximately five TMC of water is required to provide a summer cycle for agriculture from these dams, and approximately seven TMC of water will be required for the next two months for drinking purposes.

Aniruddha Pavaskar, head of the Water Supply Department of the PMC, informed that due to a large amount of water evaporation during summer, approximately two TMCs of water are likely to evaporate. Therefore, the municipal corporation should use water carefully. Such instructions have been given by the Water Resources Department to the Municipal Corporation.

The Municipal Corporation laid a closed channel of twelve kilometers from Khadakwasla to Parvati Water Centre 25 years ago. This water channel is heavily corroded and needs to be repaired in some places.

Although a tender process was implemented for the repairs, it did not receive the expected response. Once the work on this canal starts, the municipal corporation will have to lift 3,000 MLD of water from the canal per day. The water supply of the city may be affected once the canal repair work is undertaken as the water release from the canal is currently low.

Therefore, the Water Resources Department has instructed the Municipal Corporation to carry out the repair and painting work of this water channel after October.

Considering the availability of water and increasing heat, there is a possibility of a water shortage. As a result, the Municipal Corporation has started taking strict action against those who use drinking water for construction and washing vehicles to avoid the wastage of water.

Instead of using drinking water for construction and washing centers, the municipal corporation has provided treated sewage water. The taps of those using drinking water for the said purposes will be removed. Meanwhile, Pavaskar has said that new taps will not be provided during the next month and a half of summer.
