Water In Dams Of Pune District Is Less Than Half; Citizens Advised To Use Water Sparingly
Pune, 15th April 2023: Due to El Niño this year, the monsoon is likely to be prolonged and it is estimated that there will not be satisfactory rainfall in June-July. Therefore, the government has given instructions for planning available water from now. Out of 26 dams in the Bhima basin in the district, 22 dams have less than 50 per cent water storage. Therefore, the local self-government bodies along with the Irrigation Department will have to plan to get water for drinking and agriculture for the next four months.
Last year, the rains were heavy till the end of June 2022. Due to this, the water in the dam reached the bottom. But at the beginning of July, rains started appearing again in the dam area. After this, since the beginning of August, the inflow of water in the dams increased due to continuous rains. Therefore, the water level continued to rise resulting in all the dams being 100 percent full by the end of August.
Now there is a shift to agriculture from the dams. Also, water is released from the dam for drinking purposes. The Irrigation Department has made a plan considering all aspects of evaporation in the next two months and considering how much water will be available.
The total capacity of four dams namely Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon, and Temghar, supplying water to Pune city is 29.15 TMC. At present, a total of 12.99 TMC i.e. 44.55 percent water storage is available in all four dams. Bhama Askhed Dam has 3.65 TMC i.e. 47.61 percent water storage.
