Pune: Sassoon Hospital Bans Doctors From Prescribing Outside Medicines To Patients
Pune, 31st March 2023: Maharashtra state government run Sassoon Hospital Pune has taken measures to prevent doctors from prescribing outside drugs to patients. The hospital has stocked 255 essential drugs and 480 frequently prescribed drugs to ensure that patients do not have to buy their own medication, syringes, or other medical supplies. Patients visiting the government hospital are usually poor, and asking them to pay for their own medication is unacceptable, according to Dr. Sanjiv Thakur, dean of BJ Government Medical College and Sassoon Hospital.
The doctors at the hospital had been directing patients to pharmacies outside of the hospital to buy necessary medicines, leaving many struggling to find the money to pay for them.
To prevent doctors from continuing to prescribe outside drugs, the BJGMC and Sassoon hospital have made arrangements for the hospital to stock necessary medications. Dr Thakur stated that the hospital has also purchased new drugs and upgraded old ones, ensuring that doctors have access to the most up-to-date medications.
Doctors and heads of departments will face action if found prescribing drugs from outside. Only in exceptional and genuine cases will prescriptions be allowed. Staff will also be assigned near the hospital’s drug store to check people who come to purchase medicines. Anyone found coming with a prescription that is already available at the hospital will face stern action, according to Dr Thakur.
