Pune, 31st March 2023: The state department of higher and technical education in Maharashtra has instructed all self-financed universities in the state to begin accepting students from the next academic year. Under the new policy, 50% of the fees for these students will be covered by the government, with the remaining 50% to be paid by the institute. Admissions will be based on merit, with students required to take an entrance test.

Representatives from self-financed universities and the department of higher and technical education met last month to discuss the decision, which was made in the presence of Education Minister Chandrakant Patil and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The move provides deserving students with an opportunity to benefit from the high standard of private schools.

The Fee Regulating Authority has given these institutions the option to cap tuition or to keep 10% of their seats reserved for students from underprivileged backgrounds. After much discussion, a clause was agreed upon wherein the fees for launching the plan would be split 50/50.

Maharashtra is home to 22 self-financed private universities, with 12 of them located in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, according to the University Grants Commission (UGC).

In the upcoming academic year, four new independent universities are set to open, including JSPM University, Dr P. A. Inamdar University, and Universal AI University.
