Pune: Sextortion Threat Leads To Senior Citizen Paying Rs 4.66 Lakh To Cybercriminals

Pune, 30th March 2023: Shivajinagar, 30th March 2023: A senior citizen has been extorted of Rs 4.66 lakh by individuals who had befriended him on social media and then threatened him. The Chaturshringi police have registered a case against the accused.

The complainant, who is retired from a private company and resides in Model Colony, Shivajinagar, was contacted by a woman on his mobile number who later honey-trapped him. The woman and her associates subsequently threatened the senior citizen, using different mobile numbers for the same purpose. They even threatened to broadcast obscene audio and video on social media. Under duress from their threats, the senior citizen paid Rs 4.66 lakh to the accused over time. Eventually, the victim approached the Cyber police station and filed a complaint, leading to the registration of a case. Police Inspector Ankush Chintaman is investigating the matter.

The Pune police recently arrested two gangs from Rajasthan for similar crimes of sextortion. Investigations revealed that these gangs operated out of Gurugothia village in Rajasthan and had committed extortion across the country. Over the past year, sextortion cases in the city have increased, with perpetrators threatening to release obscene videos. Six months ago, two youths committed suicide after being threatened with the release of an obscene video on social media.
