Pune, 29th March 2023: The Shivne-Kharadi road development project has been stalled once again due to a lack of land acquisition. The administration has prepared a revised proposal for extending the land acquisition deadline, which will soon be sent to the Municipal Commissioner for approval. The work between Rajaram Bridge and Mhatre Bridge also remains incomplete due to technical difficulties in acquiring land.

The development of the 18 km Shivne-Kharadi road through the river basin was initiated in 2011 under the Integrated Road Development Plan. The Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Road Department was assigned the task, with a pre-calculation sheet of Rs 307.44 crore prepared for the project, and a contractor was appointed via tender. However, the project hit a snag due to difficulties in land acquisition.

The project’s deadline was extended by two years in May 2014, and subsequently extended to May 2018 when the work remained incomplete. While the road work between Karvenagar and Mahalakshmi Lawns has been completed, work between Rajaram Bridge and Mhatre Bridge is incomplete due to land acquisition issues. The incomplete portions of the road are blocked off, but the administration is working diligently to complete the remaining work.

Rajesh Barate, former corporator, noted that some land was acquired at Mahalakshmi Lawns, and road work has commenced. However, around 35 gunthas of land between Rajaram Bridge and Mhatre Bridge are still pending acquisition. “I am working to resolve this issue by holding a meeting between the landowner and the Commissioner. Traffic flow will begin in the unpaved areas once these issues are resolved,” he added.
