Pune, 26th March 2023: World Sparrow Day was celebrated in Pune on the 20th of March 2023 with great enthusiasm. This initiative was started by the organization ‘Nature Forever’ in Nashik city in the year 2010. While many days such as Women’s Day, Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day have originated from western countries, the celebration of ‘World Sparrow Day’ was started in India to raise awareness about the dwindling population of sparrows and other common or small birds worldwide and to encourage people to save their lives and conserve them.

The reason for choosing the 20th of March as this particular day is because sparrows and other common bird species start nesting and breeding around this date.

The occasion was graced by CREDAI national chairman and CMD of Magarpatta City, Satish Magar, Vice President of CREDAI national and MD Aditya Builders, Shantilal Kataria, Ornithologist Kiran Purandare, RJ Sangram, and ecologist Pankaj Koparde from MIT Group. The program was hosted by Prasad Ganpule, and all nature and bird lovers, friends, and well-wishers of Pune showed their participation to enhance the beauty of the event.

The organizer and creator of this event, Umesh Pawar, explained that in the last 15 years, 58 villages have been incorporated in Pune City Limit in the name of urbanization, causing local bird species to struggle. With this thought, he and his friend, Chaitanya Joshi, came up with the initiative ‘Shelter for Sparrows’ and decided to celebrate World Sparrow Day every year and organize awareness programs through subject matter experts.

The event included a panel discussion with eminent scholar and bird lover Kiran Purandare, Satish Magar, Shantilal Kataria, Dr. Pankaj Koparde, and RJ Sangram. Kiran Purandare explained the importance of sparrows and other small and common birds and the side effects of their enumeration. In addition, Santosh More, Gopal Hood, and Sanjay Bhor were honored as ‘Environment Friends’ in recognition of their participation.

Satish Magar gave an idea of how he has worked on various ‘green’ initiatives and environmental conservation during his 30-year long tenure. He gave guidance on how conservation and protection of birds and other wildlife can be done by people in positions of power.

RJ Sangram raised serious questions about the lack of information and awareness of discussions with people from different social strata. What does the present generation want to keep the next generation? What if our future generations get to experience fewer things, and prosperity than us? While raising such serious questions, he pointed out that it is necessary to have a clear political policy.

Shantilal Kataria suggested creating ‘Sparrow Gardens’ like the ‘Butterfly Gardens’ in many places around the world to convey this information to the masses and get the seriousness of this matter.

The event was initiated by Arambh Foundation, DreamWorks University, and Umesh Pawar, and many real-estate tycoons offered sponsorships for this event. Oxford Golf Resort was the main sponsor of the event, while Suratwala Business Group, CREDAI Maharashtra, and Ark Vista offered platinum sponsorship. Vinayak Associates and Maverick Architects offered gold sponsorship.

The event was supported by many dignitaries who were felicitated, and several collaboration partners and sponsors, including ‘Oxford Golf Resort’ and event partner ‘Creative Eye’ Chetan Suchek, Excellence Dhyas Foundation, AESA, Revell, Big FM, Shubham Outdoor Advt., Datatech Labs, Sakal Group, Punekar News, Creative Eye, Leadcon, Hishobanis, Belanza Consultants, YMK Solutions, KD Enterprises, Healthy Bagicha, EdConnexions, YesDesign, Vijaya Digital Marketing Solutions, NexL Tech, and Sakar Solutions.
