Weather Update: Thunderstorms and Lightning Expected in Pune till 17th March

Pune, 11th March 2023: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for Pune city and its surrounding areas.
According to the weather department, the cloud amount is expected to increase from the evening of March 13th (Monday) onwards. The IMD has also predicted isolated thundery activity with lightning on the afternoon of March 14th.
Starting from March 15th, the chances of rain will gradually increase in isolated areas of the city and district for a couple of days. There is also a likely chance of thundery activities and lightning during this period. However, from March 18th onwards, the chances of rain and thunder are expected to reduce gradually, informed Dr. Anupam Kashyapi, Head, Weather Forecasting, IMD Pune.
The upcoming rain is expected to provide some relief from the scorching heat that the city has been experiencing for the past few weeks. However, the IMD has also cautioned people against venturing into water bodies or flooded areas during and after heavy rains.
Possible Reason for Light Rainfall in Central-Western Peninsular India
The central-western parts of Peninsular India, including south India, east Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, and Jharkhand, may experience very light to light rainfall in isolated to scattered areas from 15th to 17th March 2023. This is due to the expected interaction between mid and upper tropospheric westerly trough/dronika rekha and lower-level easterly winds.
The trough is likely to move over the region, leading to the formation of clouds and the possibility of rain. However, the rainfall is expected to be limited to specific areas and may not be widespread.
