Pune: 464 People Died Last Year In Railway Accidents; Incidents Of Suicides Under Trains Increased
Pune, 21st February 2023: Incidents of dangerously crossing railway tracks and suicides under trains due have increased. In the Pune division, 464 people died on the railway tracks in the last year and the railway police have observed a 24 per cent increase in the number of deaths on the railway tracks.
It is illegal to cross railway tracks. In case of illegal crossing of the railway, there is a provision of penalty under the Railway Act. Railway Police’s Pune division includes six districts. Important stations like Pune, Daund, Miraj, Solapur, Kolhapur, and Ahmednagar come under the jurisdiction of the Railway Police.
Accidents occur while dangerously crossing railways. Citizens die due to train collisions. Due to financial problems, family disputes, love affairs, suicide by jumping from the train is high. Such incidents are recorded by the Railway Police. It is registered as an accidental death by the police.
Srikant Dhiware, Superintendent of Police, Pune Division of Government Railway Police (GRP) informed that 464 people have died in the Pune division during the period from January to December (2022). Railway Police has a large area of operation. He mentioned that it is not possible to keep security at every place on the railway.
Accidental deaths are high on the Pune-Lonavala railway as well as the railway passing through urban areas. To save time, citizens mostly use railway tracks.
Dhiware observed that the rate of accidental death while dangerously crossing railways is high in urban areas. Incidents of suicide by jumping on a railway tracks occur due to family disputes, love affairs, financial hardships etc.
