Pune, 18th January 2023: The Assamese community residing in Pune celebrated Magh Bihu with great fervour along with the burning of ‘meji’ ( religious bonfire).

Magh Bihu, which marks the end of the harvesting season and brings a new beginning and hope for the people, is much akin to the Pongal, Makar Sankranti, and Lohri celebrations.

The celebrations took place in Pune’s Mohammadwadi area on Saturday and saw the participation of several Assamese families residing in Pune, said ASOMI, the community in the Assamese diaspora in Pune, in a statement.

“Keeping with the traditions, a meji ( bonfire ) was lit, prayers were offered, the feast was prepared, and traditional delicacies – pitha, coconut laddus – were distributed. The members also held a tree plantation drive near the venue,” said Rajib Borkataki, General Secretary of ASOMI.
