UPI To Be Available On International Numbers For 10 Countries: NPCI
New Delhi, 11th January 2023: Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) will be able to make Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payments through international mobile numbers soon. New guidelines from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) now permit NRIs in 10 countries to use their international numbers to access UPI services for bank accounts designated as Non-Resident External (NRE) or Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) accounts.
According to NPCI, the UPI account must only be permitted following the “FEMA regulations and adherence to the guidelines/instructions provided by the respective regulatory agencies of Reserve Bank of India from time to time.” Additionally, these bank accounts must pass all “required Anti-Money Laundering (AML)/ Combating of Financing of Terrorism (CT) checks and compliance validation/account level validations as per the extent.”
Currently, the NPCI has stated that UPI will be accessible to Singapore, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Oman, Qatar, the United States of America (USA), Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and the United Kingdom (UK).
