Pune, 4th January 2023: It has been decided to appoint a new committee comprising representatives of the University Grants Commission (UGC) for the selection of the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU). Therefore, it is clear that the process of selecting the VC, which was stalled for the past few months, has been delayed again.

Dr Nitin Karmalkar’s tenure as Vice-Chancellor ended in May. After that, the additional charge of the post of Vice-Chancellor of the University was entrusted to Dr Karbhari Kale, Vice Chancellor of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Technical University.

The Vice-Chancellor selection process was stalled as the Governor did not approve the changes made by the Mahavikas Aghadi government in the University Act. The state government scrapped the proposed changes to the University Act after the transfer of power in the state in July.

Subsequently, the Vice-Chancellor Selection Committee was appointed in September. However, it did not include the representative of UGC. After that, the state government announced the implementation of the Vice-Chancellor selection process as per the decision of the University Grants Commission.

The SPPU Vice-Chancellor selection process was started and an advertisement was also released. However, officials clarified that as per the provisions of the University Act, it is necessary to constitute a new committee including the representative of UGC for the selection of the Vice-Chancellor. Therefore, it is seen that the process implemented so far will be scrapped and a new process will be started.
