Prisoner-Made Items To Be Sold At Pune Railway Station

Pune, 25th December 2022: A store selling prisoner made products was inaugurated today at the Pune Railway Station. Various prisoner enterprises such as carpentry shops, tailor shops, blacksmiths and statue-makers will have their products displayed here.

Yerwada Central Jail Superintendent Shivshankar Patil the store has been leased for 15 days under the one station, one product scheme of the Indian Railways.

“The store has wooden products like small tables and showpieces, cloth items like jackets, bedsheets and handkerchiefs and bakery products like cakes and biscuits. The purpose is to help prisoners develop their skills and aid in their rehabilitation. The prisoners are also paid wages in accordance with their skill”, Patil said.

He added, “We wanted to promote the work that the prisoners were doing. Most people don’t know that such industries exist even in prisons. Our main objective is to rehabilitate the prisoners, which is why we want to publicize their work.”

The revenue generated by this store will be deposited in the government’s treasury. Patil also added that they were attempting to extend the store’s lease beyond the 15 days allotted to them in the scheme.
