Pune, 12th December 2022: The Supreme Court (SC) has given an important judgment regarding the Consumer Commission so that the claims and cases of consumer complaints do not remain pending due to the lack of appointment of office bearers in the Consumer Commission.

Accordingly, the Supreme Court has given an interim extension till 1st March to the chairpersons and members of consumer commissions in 15 districts of Maharashtra, whose tenure of appointment is 10 years.

Chairpersons and members of consumer commissions in 15 districts of the state were appointed in 2013. The tenure of the chairperson and members of the commission will end in February 2023. The newly conducted selection process has been cancelled. Therefore, since there is no possibility of appointing a new office bearer, the court has given an important verdict because the work cannot continue without the post of the chairperson. The next hearing on the cases pending in the Supreme Court will be held on 15th February.

The advertisement was released in 2021 for the post of Chairperson and member. Interviews were also conducted accordingly. However, as a petition was filed in the court, the Nagpur High Court bench ruled that the result of the selection process should not be announced. Therefore, the state government appealed against this verdict in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court heard it recently. The Supreme Court has not given any order regarding the selection process. However, the Supreme Court has given an interim order to the district chairperson and members of the Consumer Commission to continue working till 1st March.

A decision will be taken on 15th February regarding the further appointment of the office bearers who have been extended at present. Accordingly, if a decision is taken to make new appointments or retain the existing office bearers, sufficient time will be available to the State Government to complete the appointment process.
