Wanowrie, 4th October 2022: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has chosen to replace a more than a century-old low-lying bridge with a new one that would be built on Bhairoba nullah, close to the Ganga Satellite housing society in Wanowrie.

Between Canning Road in Camp and Mahadji Shinde Chhatri Marg in Wanowrie, traffic is connected by the bridge. It is prone to flooding during periods of heavy rain since it lacks adequate safety barriers and barricades. In 2019, three people lost their lives after their cars were swept away by nullah water.

The PMC has been awarded permission to begin demolition work by the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB).

Engineer for the PMC drainage department Ganesh Puram stated on Monday, ”During the monsoon, Bhairoba nullah began to overflow, up to 2.5 feet from the bridge. To stop accidents, we had to close the bridge from both sides. In order to prevent floods even if the nullah overflows during the monsoon, we have decided to remove the bridge in the next 8 to 10 days and build a new one.”

He added, “After paving the road close to Ganga Satellite, we will divert traffic from an old bridge on Bhairoba nullah before starting the destruction. In low-lying regions of Wanowrie, Kharadi, Hadapsar, Kalepadal, Handewadi, B T Kawade Road, and other locations, the work of building new drains has started.”

”We have been requesting that the tiny bridge, which is utilized for two-way traffic, be demolished and a new one built,” according to former PCB member Vinod Mathurawala.

Wanowrie Residents’ Forum secretary Maithili Manakwad, stated, “The removal of the bridge is necessary at this time due to Wanowrie’s fast urbanization. During peak hours, the bridge has turned into a significant bottleneck for two-way traffic.”

Wanowrie traffic police inspector PN Hajare stated, “Last week, the PMC stopped the bridge after the nullah began to overflow. Before demolishing the bridge, we’ve asked the authorities to put up barricades, signboards, and traffic wardens.’’
