Karnataka’s Schools And Colleges Keep Hammering on Hijab, 6 Muslim Girls Suspended
Bengaluru, 4th June 2022: Authorities in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district on Thursday suspended six Muslim girl students for wearing the hijab despite several warnings. In another action, 12 girl students were sent back from school for wearing hijab while attending classes.
News agency ANI quoted the principal of Government First Class College Uppinangadyo as saying, “Another student was suspended from the college after she reached here wearing a hijab. She was suspended for six days from yesterday.”
Six girl students of Uppinangadi Government Pre University College have been suspended for repeatedly violating the hijab guidelines. The college principal decided to suspend the students after holding a meeting with the college lecturers. Six girl students were informed about the government order and the decision of the High Court prohibiting the wearing of hijab in classes.
However, the officials of Mangaluru University College near Hampanakatte are sending back the girl students who come wearing hijabs. On Thursday, 16 girl students wearing hijab demanded that they should be allowed to attend classes. The college principal denied them admission to the classes and sent them back. This decision was taken in a Syndicate meeting. The girl students had also gone to the district commissioner’s office and complained about not being allowed to attend classes wearing hijab.
The DC had advised them to follow the rules of the government and the order of the court. However, the girls did not agree and reached the college wearing hijabs on Thursday.
The hijab controversy started by 6 girl students of Udupi Pre-University Government Girls College was making international headlines in the state. A special bench of the High Court set up to hear the matter ruled against wearing any religious symbol, including the hijab, in classrooms. The court had also dismissed a petition filed by girl students seeking permission to wear hijab in schools.
