Pune: For The First Time, B.A.4 and 5 Variants Of Omicron Found In Maharashtra

Pune, 28th May 2022: According to the latest report of the Whole Genomic Sequencing conducted in coordination with the B.J. Medical College Pune, four patients of B.A. 4 variants and three patients of B.A. 5 variants have been found in Pune.
The new variant has been identified in a WGS conducted by the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) and has been confirmed by the Indian Biological Data Center (IBDC) Faridabad.
The following is a brief information of these 7 patients:
- All these patients are from Pune city and are from 4th May to 18th May 2022.
- Of these, 4 are males and 3 are females.
- Of them, 4 are in the age group of more than 50 years and 2 are in the age group of 20 to 40 years while one is below 10 years.
- Two of these patients have a history of traveling to South Africa, Belgium, while three have traveled to the Indian states of Kerala and Karnataka. The two patients have no travel history.
- All but one 9-year-old have received both doses of the covid vaccine while one has also taken a booster.
- All of them had mild symptoms of covid. No one needs to be hospitalized & treated successfully in-home isolation.
B. A. 4 and 5 are of the Omicron sub lineage, which increases the rate of transmission of the virus to certain extent according to international experience.
As on today, there are 2772 active COVID cases in the Maharashtra state. 529 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the state today. 325 patients were discharged today after full
recovery until today. The recovery rate in the state is 98.09%.
