An initiative of Rotary Club of Poona Airport

Rotary Club of Poona Airport has undertaken a Water Project at Gram Prabhodhini Vidyalaya, a rural school in Salumbre village, 40 kms from Pune. The school has over 350 students, 40% girls, from nearby villages. The focus of teaching in the school is towards rural students hence subjects like animal husbandry, water management and agriculture are taught at the basic levels.

The school is currently dependent on water from the river. Water is pumped to the school which is 200 metres away. Increased construction in the area has polluted this source of water. Objective of this Project is to make the school self sufficient on their own source.

In the 1st Phase of the program, trenches and pits were dug before the monsoon to trap the rain water which normally just runs over their land. On 1st July 2016, 300 saplings were planted by the students, Rotarians from Rotary Club of Poona Airport and students from St Andrews school, Pune.

In the next phase, a bore well will be dug and system installed for use of grey water for watering the plantation through either drip or diffusion irrigation.

Students are involved in the Project with objective of making them aware of water harvesting and water saving techniques. Project will be completed before the end of the year.
