3rd Maharashtra International Open Grandmaster Chess Tournament to Commence in Pune from April 20

Pune, 19th April 2025: The 3rd Maharashtra International Open Grandmaster Chess Tournament will be held from April 20 to 28, 2025, at Amanora Mall, Pune. The event is being organized by the Maharashtra Chess Association under the auspices of the All India Chess Federation (AICF) and the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

This premier chess tournament will witness participation from top players representing 13 countries, including India, Armenia, USA, Indonesia, Slovakia, Georgia, Russia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Egypt.

Speaking about the tournament, Mr. Niranjan Godbole, Secretary of the Maharashtra Chess Association, and Grandmaster Abhijit Kunte expressed their excitement about hosting players from across the globe. “We are proud to provide a platform for both seasoned grandmasters and emerging young talents to showcase their skills,” said Mr. Godbole.

The tournament will be conducted in a 9-round Swiss league format in accordance with FIDE’s latest rules. A generous prize fund of ₹30,00,000 has been announced, making it one of the most lucrative chess events in the country.

International Arbiter (IA) Srivastan R has been appointed as the Chief Arbiter, and IA Atharva Godbole will serve as the Deputy Arbiter for the event. With global participation and a strong lineup of young Indian players, the tournament is expected to be a thrilling spectacle, reflecting the growing stature of Indian chess on the international stage.
