Pune, 19th November 2023: The Dehu Road Bypass is currently experiencing a traffic standstill stretching over 17 kilometres, starting from New Katraj Tunnel and extending up to Shivane. The roadway is packed with hundreds of vehicles.

The primary cause of this traffic snarl is the mass exodus of individuals who had left Pune for their hometowns during the Diwali holiday. As the holiday season concludes, a significant number of people, including those who have come to Pune for work or education, are making their way back to the city.

The vacation period for many private institutions, schools, and colleges in Pune began on November 8, 2023, and is set to conclude tomorrow, November 20, 2023. This influx of returnees is contributing to the current rush on the Dehu Road Bypass.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that not only Pune residents but also individuals travelling to Mumbai are utilizing the same route, resulting in heavy traffic from Kolhapur to Pune side of road. Many commuters not only visited their hometowns but also explored tourist destinations such as Konkan, Mahabaleshwar, Pachgani, etc., during the Diwali break, adding to the vehicular congestion.

As the holidaymakers and commuters converge on the same route, authorities are advising travellers to plan their journeys accordingly and brace for delays.
