Pune, 5th August 2024: The Maharashtra State Transport Department is set to establish two vehicle scrapping centres in Pune, with the process expected to commence within the next 2-3 months.

“Two locations have been identified in Pune for these centres,” informed Vivek Bhimanwar, the state transport commissioner.

The vehicle scrapping policy, approved by the central government in 2021, mandated the establishment of state-approved scrapping centres. Currently, Maharashtra has three of the twelve designated centres, with two located in Jalna district and one in Nagpur.

“We have not yet received official communication from the transport department regarding the new centres. These will be overseen by the RTO, and vehicle owners who choose to scrap their vehicles will receive a 10% tax concession on a new vehicle,” explained Swapnil Bhosle, Pune’s deputy RTO.

Another RTO official highlighted the ongoing efforts to identify suitable scrapping centre locations. “Many people have concerns about whether the scrapping centres will perform their job correctly and whether their old vehicles might be misused. Consequently, many prefer to keep their vehicles, even if they are over 15-20 years old and non-operational. With government-approved centres, the entire scrapping process will be fully monitored. The RTO will ensure proper records are maintained and shared,” the official said.

According to regulations, commercial vehicles older than 15 years must be scrapped. For private vehicles, it is recommended to scrap them, though owners can opt for re-registration for another five years, provided they pay the green tax.

The RTO official urged the public to scrap their old vehicles for environmental reasons. “With the launch of these two centres, we will ensure they are well-publicized and maintained,” the official added.
