AFMC Pune Celebrates 62nd Anniversary of Graduate Wing

Pune, 6th August 2024: The Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune celebrated the 62nd anniversary of its Graduate Wing on August 4, 2024. Inaugurated on August 4, 1962, by then Defence Minister Shri V.K. Krishna Menon, AFMC has since graduated over 7,600 doctors who have gone on to serve as distinguished academicians, clinicians, scientists, and administrators in the Armed Forces as well as in public and private sector organizations both in India and internationally.

Recognizing its outstanding service to the Armed Forces and the nation, AFMC was awarded the President’s Colour by the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, on December 1, 2023. Additionally, it received the Unit Citation from General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff, on March 18, 2024.

To mark the occasion, Lt Gen Sandeep Thareja, Director and Commandant, Brig Mukhtar Alam (Retd), the first alumnus of the college, Maj Gen Giriraj Singh, Dean and Deputy Commandant, and other dignitaries laid wreaths at ‘Prerna Sthal’ to honor the brave hearts.

The two-day celebrations included invigorating debates and quizzes, as well as spirited football, basketball, and cricket matches between alumni and medical cadets, highlighting their camaraderie and competitive spirit. The 59th edition of the college magazine ‘Dhanvantari,’ featuring literary contributions from medical cadets, alumni, and faculty, was released in the presence of Lt. Gen. Madhuri Kanitkar (Retd.), Vice-Chancellor of MUHS, Nashik, and an alumna of AFMC. Numerous veteran and serving alumni attended the event, sharing fond memories of their undergraduate days at this esteemed institution.

The college’s alumni have a significant presence both nationally and globally. Reflecting the festivities at AFMC, alumni gathered at various locations to celebrate the founding day of their alma mater.

Lt Gen Daljit Singh, Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services, extended heartfelt congratulations to all alumni, praising their remarkable achievements and lasting contributions.

Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Southern Command, conveyed his best wishes to the institution, its faculty, and cadets.

In addition to training skilled doctors, nurses, and paramedical personnel, AFMC has conducted numerous outreach health and awareness programs in remote rural areas of the state, furthering its mission of service and excellence.
